A male. The face, thorax and abdomen are scarlet. Both sexes have wing-spots outlined in black, yellow patches at the base of each wing (larger on the hind-wings) and orange-red veins at the front of the wings.

Sometimes the male shows dark lines down the centre of s8 & s9. Broad abdomen.
